A Must-Have for Teaching Categorization and Vocabu

May 02, 2025 - By LoriBslpfrom Henderson, NV

The Category Sorting Activity Box from Lakeshore Learning has become one of my go-to tools for speech therapy in the elementary school setting. The colorful, real-photo cards are visually engaging and easy for students to relate to, which makes them ideal for targeting categorization, vocabulary development, and critical thinking skills. I use this set to help students with language delays or processing challenges learn how to group items meaningfully and explain their reasoning. The included sorting mats provide a clear visual structure, making it accessible for students at different developmental levels, including those with autism or expressive/receptive language disorders. The activity is highly versatileI've used it for group work, one-on-one sessions, and even quick data collection. It supports both expressive and receptive language goals and opens up opportunities for building descriptive language, making comparisons, and answering why questions. Durable, well-organized, and easy to implement, this resource is an excellent investment for any speech-language pathologist or educator working on foundational language skills.

Yes, I would recommend this product.

This product is the best of the best to teach kids about different animals and their habitats. The texture is a plus. Very durable and resistant to water. Just keep an eye on your kid because the pieces are small. Perfect product, I'm in love.

Great product

January 05, 2023 - By Alycia D.

There are so many great ways to use this, and it is a product that can grow with your toddler. Mine currently loves puzzles and the cards are similar to a puzzle in that the objects are outlined where to place them on the mat. This product also helps teach sorting, categorization, and expand vocabulary.

Yes, I would recommend this product.

Great way to teach category sorting

May 05, 2020 - By SMfrom Palo Alto, CA

I have a speech delayed toddler and this has been an excellent aid in helping speech along. The pieces and cards are colorful and sturdy. This box can be used in so many ways to teach so many things. I've had it for over a year and it's still one of my toddlers favorite. Whenever I want to work on speech, I bring this out along with a few other Lakeshore boxes with manipulatives and it's always a great learning/teaching session.

Yes, I would recommend this product.
