Alumni 360 Takes a Field Trip to Lakeshore

Alumni 360 helps young people develop the skills they need to lead successful lives and flourish in their communities. This nonprofit organization gets kids out into the real world, participating in social events, camps, and even field trips.

White House Celebrates Innovative Partnership of National Head Start Association and Lakeshore
Washington, D.C.

Over the last two years, Lakeshore has been working closely with National Head Start Association to develop Recycle Your Way to STEAM—an activity-based program designed to help early learners explore science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. Together, we have introduced STEM and STEAM concepts to over 20,000 teachers, children, and their families. Our shared goal is to reach over 1,000,000 Head Start families and educators across the country.

Keeping the Season Bright

The holidays really do bring out the best in people—and Lakeshore’s participation in Crittenton’s Angel Tree Program is a great example. For over a decade, our employees and their families have donated thousands of holiday gifts to abused and neglected children through this wonderful program. This year alone, employees from every corner of the company donated a total of 634 gifts for these great kids!

This holiday season, Lakeshore was thrilled to play Santa’s helper by donating 6,000 new learning toys to Long Beach Day Nursery—a local child care center partnering with Long Beach Unified School District Child Development Centers to host a “Santa’s Workshop Toy Giveaway” for preschoolers in need.

Lakeshore Signs the American Business Act on Climate Pledge
Washington, D.C.

In the summer of 2015, the White House launched the American Business Act on Climate Pledge. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26%-28% by 2025, and it calls on businesses across the country to help. Lakeshore believes that individual companies can help create a sustainable future by investing in clean energy and conserving our resources today. That’s why we have signed the pledge, and we have begun taking action to make a difference!

Making a Difference in Moore
Moore, Oklahoma

We all were distraught over the damage brought on by the category 5 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, on May 20, 2013. Some of the hardest-hit buildings included two public elementary schools that were in the tornado’s direct path.

Karen Marinelli, a first-grade teacher at Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, selflessly protected three of her students—and undoubtedly saved their lives—as she shielded them from a brick wall that crumbled on her back. She has since had surgery and is in a wheelchair for the time being. However, she refuses to give up her passion and continues to teach at a nearby school while Plaza Towers is rebuilt.

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, the Arbor Day Foundation presented Lakeshore with the prestigious Rachel Carson Award in recognition of our efforts to connect children with nature and inspire educators across the country to do the same. Previous National Arbor Day Award winners include the late Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, veteran newsman Bill Kurtis, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Mary Kay Inc.

Special Olympics Event Raises More Than $1.1 Million
Santa Monica, CA

A number of Lakeshore employees recently headed out to Pacific Park in Santa Monica to participate in Pier del Sol, an annual fund-raising event that supports Special Olympics Southern California. The day was an overwhelming success—with over 2,500 people attending. In fact, this was the most successful fund-raising event in the history of Special Olympics Southern California, raising more than $1.1 million!

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record®

On October 6, 2011, children across the country attempted to break a world record—by sitting down together to read! Read for the Record® is an annual event organized by Jumpstart, an early education organization that helps children build the language and literacy skills they need to succeed in school. Last year, Jumpstart led over 2 million children in reading the same book on the same day. This year, they wanted to beat that record—and Lakeshore wanted to help!

The Exchange Center Makeover Project

Anyone who knows child care knows Exchange magazine! For more than three decades they have helped lead the way in our industry—providing guidance, sharing ideas and educating thousands of teachers & caregivers.

Central to the mission at Exchange is a commitment to community. Evidence of this commitment is their creation of the Exchange Center Makeover Project…a new initiative that Lakeshore is proud to support. The project identifies high-quality child care centers that need crucial assistance, and then they work with organizations like Lakeshore who donate much-needed materials.

From Haiti to Home in Colorado
Denver, Colorado

Among the many thousands of children affected by the magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Haiti were dozens of orphans already in the process of being adopted by loving families in Colorado.

Knowing that these children were frightened, without reliable shelter, and in many cases injured, Governor Bill Ritter and the Colorado Department of Human Services worked with both Haitian and international relief officials to get these children to their new homes as quickly as possible.

A Group Effort for a Great Group of Kids
Just before noon on May 22, several tornadoes ripped through northern Colorado. The Windmill Child Enrichment Center in Windsor was hit particularly hard, losing a large part of its roof and thousands of dollars in materials. Thankfully, through the quick thinking and action of teachers, none of the children and staff present were injured.

Serving Southland Kids Displaced by Wildfires
San Diego / San Bernardino, California

As wildfires erupted all over the Southland from Santa Barbara County to the Mexican border, thousands were forced to evacuate quickly. A San Diego public schools representative soon contacted Lakeshore. We were told that 15,000 students had already been displaced and had to spend the night in Qualcomm Stadium, one of the evacuation centers. We sprang into action, calling the head of the San Diego Teachers Union to find out what was needed and where to send it.

In Katrina’s Wake

Hurricane Katrina wreaked unimaginable devastation on the Gulf Coast—and turned thousands of families into evacuees overnight. As countless individuals and organizations turned out to help with disaster relief, a call from Houston, Texas, gave Lakeshore an amazing opportunity to contribute to the relief effort.
