Making a Difference in Mississippi
Jackson, Mississippi

With floodwaters rising throughout western Mississippi, state and federal authorities are working day and night to provide disaster relief to the nearly 250,000 people who live in the affected areas. As more residents seek shelter, the lives of young children are being severely disrupted, and Lakeshore is happily stepping in to lend a hand.

The Mississippi Department of Human Services in Jackson is actively working to create “safe spaces” for those displaced along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. At each of these “safe spaces,” families are able to get much-needed rest and relief—and children can play, read, sleep and live as normally as possible until floodwaters recede.

Lakeshore’s longtime Mississippi representative Darryl Thomas is working with the MDHS to ensure that the “safe spaces” are outfitted with items to help children adjust during this difficult time. Thanks to Darryl’s coordination with MDHS officials, Lakeshore is able to donate a variety of much-needed materials—from books, games and puzzles to dolls, puppets, art supplies and more.

We want to thank the MDHS for all it is doing for families affected by the flooding. Whether the MDHS is assisting with disaster relief or promoting early childcare, it is a tireless advocate for the welfare of Mississippi’s children.
