Children can greet their friends with a heart-shaped wreath that says welcome!

This activity is appropriate for:
1st - 3rd grade / 6 - 8 years

You will need:

  • 10" circle of cardboard for each child or Classroom Collage Box
  • 8" paper plate for tracing
  • Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (about twenty 1 1⁄2" x 6" strips of red, white, and pink construction paper for each child)
  • 2 long strips of red construction paper (about 12") for each child
  • 2 medium strips of white construction paper (about 8" long) for each child
  • 2 short strips of pink construction paper (about 6" long) for each child
  • Safety Scissors
  • Best-Buy School Glue
  • Stapler
  • Tape
  • Short piece of string or ribbon

Directions

  1. Start with a 10" cardboard circle (this can be pre-made or cut out of old cardboard such as a cereal box). Trace the perimeter of an 8" paper plate in the center of the cardboard, then cut out the center to make a ring.
  2. Glue the ends of the 1 1⁄2" x 6" construction paper strips together to make rings.
  3. Glue the rings in an alternating pattern onto the cardboard ring.
  4. For the 3-D valentine heart in the center of the wreath, you will use the 6", 8" and 12" construction paper strips. Lay the strips down on top of each other in this order: pink, white, red, red, white, pink. One end of the strips should be flush with each other. Staple that end of the strips together.
  5. Fold back the strips from the unstapled end so that they bow out into a heart shape. Staple the strips together at the point where they meet.
  6. Tape one end of a piece of string or red ribbon to the top of the wreath (leaving enough extra string or ribbon on top for hanging). Attach the other end to the 3-D heart so that it hangs in the middle of the wreath.
  7. Your Valentine’s Day wreath is ready for display!
