This simple sunflower craft makes it easy for children to express their thanks!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 3rd grade / 3 - 8 years

You will need:

Before you begin:

Reproduce the sunflower petals, sunflower stem and sunflower center templates onto 9" x 12" construction paper. Use yellow for the petals, green for the stem, and brown for the center. Each child will need one stem, one center and 5–10 petals.

  1. Pass out the templates and prompt students to cut them out. (For younger children, you may want to have volunteers help you cut the templates in advance.)
  2. Encourage students to write (or dictate as you write) things they are thankful for on several petals.
  3. Provide each student with a 12" x 18" sheet of orange construction paper. Help students glue the parts of the sunflower onto the orange paper.
  4. Prompt students to glue sunflower seeds to the center of the sunflower.
  5. If desired, have students cut a strip of white construction paper and glue it below the sunflower. On the strip, have students write, “I am thankful.” (Or write it for them.)
  6. As the sunflowers are drying, invite students to share one or two of the things they are thankful for!
  7. Display the completed sunflowers on a bulletin board titled “We Are Thankful!”
