Let the sunlight shine splashes of color onto your classroom walls…with these fun-to-make suncatchers!

This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten - 3rd grade / 5 - 8 years

You will need:

  1. Reproduce several copies of the Sunglasses Suncatcher template and cut them out. Have students trace the sunglasses onto black construction paper.
  2. Instruct students to cut out the sunglasses. Make sure they cut out the inside pieces, too! (Younger students may need help with this step.)
  3. Cut a sheet of clear adhesive plastic that’s slightly larger than the sunglasses, and tape it sticky-side-up to each student’s desk.
  4. Provide students with tissue paper squares in a variety of colors, and invite them to cover the surface of the adhesive plastic with the squares. Encourage them to overlap the squares so that all clear parts are covered.
  5. Have students place a second sheet of clear adhesive plastic (with the sticky side down) on top of the first sheet.
  6. Prompt students to glue their sunglasses to the adhesive plastic. After the glue dries, have them trim around the edge of the sunglasses to remove any excess plastic.
  7. Tape the completed suncatchers to your classroom windows, or punch a hole in the top and hang them with string!
