Celebrate Read Across America Day with handy bookmarks that encourage students to keep a record of the books they’ve read!

This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten - 4th grade / 5 - 9 years

You will need:

Before you begin:

  1. Print and photocopy the bookmark picture template and reading log template. Students will need one of each. You may want to precut the templates for younger students.
  2. Cut construction paper lengthwise into strips for each student that are about 2 inches wide.

  1. Have students choose a bookmark picture and cut it out. Invite students to color the picture.
  2. Have students take a reading log and cut it out. You may want to use Reading Log A for younger students reading picture books, and Reading Log B for older students reading chapter books.
  3. Invite students to choose a strip of construction paper. Show them how to glue the picture and the reading log onto the strip to complete their bookmark.
  4. Encourage students to use their bookmark to keep track of books that they are reading throughout the month! (If students fill up the reading log, simply staple a new log on top.)
