Students will love keeping their pencils inside this lucky pencil holder!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 2nd grade / 3 - 7 years

You will need:

Before you begin:

For younger students, you may want to precut the felt or construction paper so that the pieces are ready to assemble.

  1. For the brim of the hat, place a CD onto a sheet of green felt or construction paper and trace around it. Then cut out the circle.
  2. For the hat, cut a strip of green felt or construction paper to fit the height and circumference of the soup can.
  3. Then cut a half-inch-tall strip of black felt or construction paper to wrap around the bottom of the can.

  1. Give each student a soup can and glue.
  2. Have students glue the bottom of their soup can to the center of their green circle.
  3. Next, instruct students to wrap the green felt or construction paper around their soup can and secure it with glue.
  4. Then, have students glue the black strip around the bottom of the can so that it rests on top of the “brim” of the hat.
  5. Finally, have students cut out a one-inch square from the foam sheets or wrapping paper. Instruct them to glue it to the black strip to create the “buckle.”
  6. After the glue dries, encourage students to use their leprechaun hats to store pencils, crayons or markers!
