These cute hats are perfect for high-flying October fun!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 2nd grade / 4 - 7 years

You will need:

  1. Have students place their hands (palms down with fingers close together and thumbs apart) on a sheet of black 9" x 12" construction paper.
  2. Have a partner or parent volunteer trace around the students’ hands with a black marker onto the paper.
  3. Instruct students to cut out their handprints.
  4. Give each student a 1" x 18" strip of black construction paper.
  5. Show students how to glue the two handprints onto the centers of the strips so that the palms overlap, the fingers are facing outward to form bat wings, and the thumbs are facing up to form bat ears!
  6. Invite students to add Peel & Stick Wiggly Eyes to their bats and to decorate bats with glitter painters.
  7. Help each student position the bat on his or her forehead and measure the strip around his or her head, securing the two ends of the strip together at the back with a glue stick to make a headband!
  8. Teach students the following poem and invite them to act it out while wearing their bat hats!

Bats come out and soar at night,
Sometimes they’re a spooky sight!
Wings spread wide so they can fly—
Moving shadows across the sky.
