These memorable keepsakes are sure to be a hit on Grandparents Day this year!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 3rd grade / 4 - 8 years

You will need:

  1. Have each student choose a sheet of construction paper in any color and then fold the paper in half crosswise (hamburger style).
  2. Show students how to position the folded paper on their desks so that the fold is across the top.
  3. Have each student choose another sheet of construction paper in a contrasting color (so that it will show up well against the card), and then trace and cut out his or her handprint.
  4. Instruct students to glue their paper handprint onto the outside of their card without putting any glue on the middle or fourth fingers.
  5. Give each student a sheet of red construction paper and have him or her use a heart template to trace and cut out a heart (or you can cut out a red heart for each student ahead of time).
  6. Help students glue their heart onto the palm of their handprint.
  7. Show students how to make the American Sign Language symbol for “I love you” by folding down and gluing the middle and fourth fingers of each handprint over the heart.
  8. Give each student a copy of the Grandparents Day poem to glue to the inside of the card.
  9. Invite students to sign their name and give their card to their grandparents for National Grandparents Day on September 7!
