Give students a chance to express their gratitude with this traditional symbol of thanks!

This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten - 3rd grade / 5 - 8 years

You will need:

  1. Tell students that they are going to be making cornucopias. Explain that a cornucopia is associated with Thanksgiving because it is a symbol of a good harvest. It reminds us that we have much to be thankful for.
  2. Ask students to think about what they are thankful for and invite volunteers to share their thoughts. Write a few of these ideas on the board so that students may reference them later.
  3. Give each student a copy of the cornucopia template. Have students glue it onto a sheet of construction paper to give it a sturdy backing.
  4. Provide each student with art tissue paper, scissors, and glue. Instruct students to tear the tissue paper into small pieces (about 1 inch wide).
  5. Have students glue the pieces onto the cornucopia. Encourage students to use the appropriate color for each fruit or vegetable. Prompt them to tear smaller pieces as needed to complete the colorful design!
  6. Print out the “I am Thankful” Sentence Strips and cut them apart. Give one strip to each student.
  7. Have students use crayons or markers to complete the sentence. Then have them glue the strip to the bottom of their completed cornucopia.
  8. Display the completed works of art in your classroom to remind students of all the things they’re thankful for this Thanksgiving season!
