Introduce your students to the fun of reusing and recycling—with this creative Earth Day project!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 1st grade / 3 - 6 years

You will need:

Directions

  1. Give each student an egg-carton strip.
  2. Invite students to select a pair of wiggly eyes, two pipe stems and some flexible shapes to decorate their caterpillars.
  3. Instruct students to glue the pair of wiggly eyes onto the front of the caterpillar.
  4. Help students stick the pipe stems into the carton strip above the eyes. (You may need to use scissors to poke holes in the carton strip first. Pull the pipe stem through the hole and bend the end of the pipe stem to secure it.) Invite students to twist, bend or curl the pipe stems to form antennae.
  5. Encourage students to use the flexible shapes to decorate the caterpillar!
  6. Students can use their completed caterpillars as garden decorations at home or desktop decorations at school!

Extension

These caterpillars are perfect for exploring nonstandard measurement—hands on! Divide students into pairs and have them take turns measuring their partners’ arms and legs by lining up the caterpillars end to end. They can even use their caterpillars to measure the lengths of tables, desks or classroom chalkboards!
