This kid-pleasing activity combines partner work, artistic expression and simple measurement…and lets students dazzle parents on Back-to-School Night!

This activity is appropriate for:
1st - 6th grade / 6 - 11 years

You will need:

Directions

  1. Provide each student with a piece of butcher paper that is longer than the student is tall. Depending on the age of your students, you may want to just cut all of the pieces of butcher paper at 4' or 5'.
  2. Have students partner up.
  3. Instruct one of the pair to lie down on the butcher paper.
  4. Instruct the other person to trace her partner with a crayon or pencil, or ask a volunteer or aid to do so.
  5. Once one student has been completely traced, students should switch jobs.
  6. When both students have been traced on their piece of butcher paper, explain that they get to decorate themselves. Encourage students to draw their clothes, hair, shoes and accessories with crayons and markers.
  7. After the butcher paper kids have been decorated, each student should help their partner measure the lengths of their arms, legs, head, hands, feet, etc. with the yard stick or tape measure.
  8. Ask students to record their body measurements on the other side of their butcher paper kid.
  9. On Back-to-School Night, children can put their butcher paper kid in their seat…will any parents be fooled?
