Students will love helping these word family spiders “catch” words in their webs!

This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten – 2nd grade / 5 – 7 years

You will need:

Before you begin:

Cut ¼–inch slits all the way around the circumference of each plate, about 1½ inches apart.

Directions

  1. Give each student a black plate and approximately eight pieces of 12" yarn or string.
  2. Instruct students to hook one end of the string through a slit, and tape the end to the back of the plate. Then have them stretch the string across the plate to another slit on the opposite side. Have them slip the string through the opposite slit so that the string is pulled tightly across the front of the plate. Tape the end of the string to the back of the plate. Repeat with other pieces of string to create a design that resembles a spider web.
  3. Give each student a spider template and a set of corresponding word family cards. Read aloud the word endings and word family cards. Point out how the endings of each word in the word family are the same as the ending on the spider (e.g., The words “can” and “man” are in the “–an” family). Ask students if they can name any other words that might belong in that word family.
  4. Have students color the spider brown and cut it out. (You may want to precut the spiders for younger students.) Instruct them to glue a brown pom-pom onto the spider for its head and to glue wiggly eyes to the pom-pom.
  5. Finally, have students glue the spider and word family cards to their webs so that it looks like the spider has “caught” the words in its web.
Note: Blank spider and word cards are provided for you to make your own word ending spider and corresponding word family cards.
