Display the first signs of spring with these colorful glass vases!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 3rd grade / 3 - 8 years

You will need:

Before you begin:

  1. Wash the bottles or jars with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly.
  2. Make enough glue mixture for the class by adding equal parts glue and water to the large jar. Cover and shake vigorously to blend. (To thicken the mixture, just add more glue.)

Directions

  1. Divide the class into small groups. (One adult volunteer per group may be needed to supervise and assist younger children.) Pour the glue mixture into small bowls for each group.
  2. Provide each student with a bottle or jar “vase,” paintbrushes and tissue paper squares.
  3. Have students use the paintbrushes to cover small sections of their vases with the glue mixture. Explain to students that they will make a colorful design by gluing tissue squares on each section.
  4. Invite students to stick the tissue squares to their vases. (Prompt them to add glue to the tissue pieces if needed to make them stick.) Each completed vase will be covered in overlapping colored squares!
  5. Have students paint an additional layer of the glue mixture over the tissue squares and allow them to dry.
  6. Encourage students to pick spring wildflowers for their colorful vases and take them home to enjoy.
