It’s Time for…
Objectives Objectives
  • Students will identify what time of day certain activities take place.
  • Students will correctly match time to the hour on a digital clock and analog clock.

Read aloud It’s About Time! by Stuart J. Murphy and explain to students that we do different things at certain times of the day. For example, we might have breakfast at seven o’clock in the morning but get ready for bed at eight o’clock at night.



  1. Make a chart on a class chalkboard or whiteboard showing times to the hour. Explain that, on an analog clock, the big hand points to the 12 and the little hand points to the number of the hour. For example, at 8:00, the big hand is on 12 and the little hand is on 8. You may want to use a teaching clock to demonstrate how the minute hand goes around the clock and the hour hand slowly advances from one number to the next.
  2. Practice showing different times to the hour with a teaching clock or by drawing a clock on a board. Have student volunteers take turns guessing the time. Then invite students to suggest what they might do at this time in the morning, afternoon or night.
  3. Explain to students how both analog and digital clocks show time. As you show times on an analog clock, demonstrate how to write the same times in digital format. For example, write “10:00” next to an analog clock showing ten o’clock.

Independent Practice

  1. Photocopy the time match-up card and a set of six game pieces for each student. Have students cut out the round game pieces. (You may want to precut the pieces for younger students.)
  2. Explain to students that the card shows activities at different times of the day. Have students work independently to match the digital time on the game pieces to the analog time shown on each game card square.
  3. Encourage students to check their work by comparing their answers with a partner.
