Connecting children to nature has powerful educational, developmental and behavioral benefits—like encouraging observation and problem solving skills, nurturing a concern for the environment and fighting the effects of childhood obesity through physical activity. One of Lakeshore’s most exciting projects in a long time is our new outdoor Nature Explore® Classroom at Kids & Company, our on-site preschool for employees’ children. It is the third California classroom and the 25th in the nation to be fully certified by the Arbor Day Foundation (ADF) and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation—and we couldn’t be more excited or proud of their accomplishment!

Special Olympics Thumb Special Olympics Event Raises More Than $1.1 Million
Santa Monica, CA

A number of Lakeshore employees recently headed out to Pacific Park in Santa Monica to participate in Pier del Sol, an annual fund-raising event that supports Special Olympics Southern California. The day was an overwhelming success—with over 2,500 people attending. In fact, this was the most successful fund-raising event in the history of Special Olympics Southern California, raising more than $1.1 million!

On October 6, 2011, children across the country attempted to break a world record—by sitting down together to read! Read for the Record® is an annual event organized by Jumpstart, an early education organization that helps children build the language and literacy skills they need to succeed in school. Last year, Jumpstart led over 2 million children in reading the same book on the same day. This year, they wanted to beat that record—and Lakeshore wanted to help!

Central to the mission at Exchange is a commitment to community. Evidence of this commitment is their creation of the Exchange Center Makeover Project…a new initiative that Lakeshore is proud to support. The project identifies high-quality child care centers that need crucial assistance, and then they work with organizations like Lakeshore who donate much-needed materials.

Among the many thousands of children affected by the magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Haiti were dozens of orphans already in the process of being adopted by loving families in Colorado.

Knowing that these children were frightened, without reliable shelter, and in many cases injured, Governor Bill Ritter and the Colorado Department of Human Services worked with both Haitian and international relief officials to get these children to their new homes as quickly as possible.

Tornado Video ThumbJust before noon on May 22, several tornadoes ripped through northern Colorado. The Windmill Child Enrichment Center in Windsor was hit particularly hard, losing a large part of its roof and thousands of dollars in materials. Thankfully, through the quick thinking and action of teachers, none of the children and staff present were injured.

Fire Thumb Serving Southland Kids Displaced by Wildfires
San Diego / San Bernardino, California

As wildfires erupted all over the Southland from Santa Barbara County to the Mexican border, thousands were forced to evacuate quickly. A San Diego public schools representative soon contacted Lakeshore. We were told that 15,000 students had already been displaced and had to spend the night in Qualcomm Stadium, one of the evacuation centers. We sprang into action, calling the head of the San Diego Teachers Union to find out what was needed and where to send it.

Hurricane Katrina wreaked unimaginable devastation on the Gulf Coast—and turned thousands of families into evacuees overnight.
