An Opportunity to Volunteer in Our Own Backyard
San Pedro, California
The Ernest P. Willenberg Special Education Center in San Pedro, California, serves a diverse range of students from pre-k to age 21. For several years, the staff has provided a nurturing, progressive environment for those with moderate to severe learning disabilities and physical disabilities.
When Lakeshore held its Annual Sales Meeting in nearby Manhattan Beach, we thought it would be great to volunteer some time to our local community. More than that, we wanted to volunteer as a group. So, we contacted Willenberg’s principal, Daniel Murphy, to see if he had any use for 40 or so Lakeshore employees who wanted to lend a hand. Delighted with the offer, Principal Murphy put us to work on three improvement projects at Willenberg!
We painted a long retaining wall along the drop-off area of the school—and what a colorful job it was! We also did some landscaping in the center’s common area. Finally, a group of us sewed new bibs and aprons for the students. What a time we had! It felt great to give back, and doing it together really made it special for us. Best of all, Principal Murphy told us later that the students really got a kick out of it—especially that colorfully painted wall!
