Making a Difference in Moore
We all were distraught over the damage brought on by the category 5 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, on May 20, 2013. Some of the hardest-hit buildings included two public elementary schools that were in the tornado’s direct path.
Karen Marinelli, a first-grade teacher at Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, selflessly protected three of her students—and undoubtedly saved their lives—as she shielded them from a brick wall that crumbled on her back. She has since had surgery and is in a wheelchair for the time being. However, she refuses to give up her passion and continues to teach at a nearby school while Plaza Towers is rebuilt.
As endless accounts of teacher heroism and bravery like Karen’s rose from the rubble, devastation quickly turned to determination. The community resolved to rebuild, and programs like DonorsChoose.org were ready to help teachers and students get back on track.
DonorsChoose.org is an award-winning online nonprofit organization that helps fund projects, activities, and supplies for classrooms in need. Lakeshore was thrilled to join DonorsChoose.org on the ground in Moore to help outfit classrooms and get teachers up and running—just in time for the first day of school. We’re amazed at the work done by DonorsChoose.org, and are inspired by the incredible spirit of teachers and students in this community.
