A Classroom That’s Out of This World!
Meg Guerreiro
Philadelphia, PA
As a first year teacher, I wanted to create a classroom that engages student learning and creativity while showcasing my passion for teaching. I chose outer space as the classroom theme because even though it’s not in the 4th grade curriculum, I think it’s an amazing topic kids should be exposed to at an early age. The outer space theme would also make the classroom unique and welcoming, a place where students would look forward to spending most of their day.
So far, my students have taken a liking to the room and developed a curiosity about space. Surprisingly enough, all of my students can name the planets in our solar system (in order) and describe the characteristics of each planet—even though this isn’t a part of their curriculum! The students value and appreciate the place I have created for them and respect and care for our room. I have entered this contest because my students and I take pride in our room, and we wanted to share it with all new teachers.
