Students will love introducing themselves to the class with this creative project!
This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten - 4th grade / 5 - 9 years
You will need:
- Who Am I? Class Riddles reproducible
- Construction Paper - 9" x 12"
- Empty coffee cans with lids (one per student)
- Washable Fine-Tip Markers - Class Pack or Lakeshore Crayon Packs
- Tacky Glue
- Best-Buy Scissors
- Acrylic Gemstones (optional)
- Easy-Stick Glitter Shapes (optional)
- Spangles & Sequins (optional)
- Photograph of each student (optional)
Preparation
- Cut strips of construction paper to fit around the outsides of the coffee cans. Use a variety of colors.
- Take a photograph of each student, or invite students to bring photos from home.
Directions
- Provide students with copies of the reproducible. Prompt students to write or dictate four clues about themselves. For example:
- I am a girl.
- I have a cat named Whiskers.
- I like to play soccer.
- I wear glasses.
- Invite students to choose a strip of construction paper in the color of their choice. Instruct students to cut out the clues and glue them onto the construction paper.
- Give each student a coffee can. Have students cut out the “Who am I?” label from the reproducible. Help them glue the label to the rim of the can as shown on the reproducible.
- Have students glue the strip of construction paper around their can. Encourage students to decorate the cans with a variety of collage materials, such as gemstones, glitter shapes and sequins.
- Instruct students to write their name on the back of their photo and place it inside the coffee can.
- Collect the cans and give one to each student. (Make sure students do not have their own cans.) Invite students to take turns reading the clues while the class tries to guess who is being described. Then have the student pull out the photo to reveal the answer! (For younger students, you may want to read the information aloud to the class.)
- Each week, set out five or six cans in a reading center. Students will enjoy sharing information about themselves and learning new things about each other!
