Play this classic game—with a Valentine’s Day twist!
This activity is appropriate for:
pre-k - 3rd grade / 4 - 8 years
You will need:
- Heart Shapes template
- Foam Sheets (white and pink for hearts; red or purple for board)
- Lakeshore Jumbo Glitter Painters - 12-Bottle Set
- Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (white)
- Crayons, markers or colored pencils
- Fiskars Classroom Scissors
Preparation
- Cut red or purple foam sheets into six–inch squares. You will need one for each student.
- Photocopy the Heart Shapes template onto white construction paper. Or you can provide white and pink foam sheets for students to trace the shapes onto. (Each game board requires two sets of five hearts.)
Directions
- Provide each student with a foam square, and allow them to share glitter painters.
- Have students create wavy lines on the foam to create a tic–tac–toe board. Remind students that each space on the game board should be about the same size.
- Give each student a copy of the Heart Shapes template. Have students color one of the player’s sets of hearts pink or red (a different color than the game board) and cut out all ten hearts to use as game pieces. Or instruct students to trace the hearts onto foam sheets and cut them out.
- After the game boards have dried, invite students to play Valentine Tic–Tac–Toe with a partner!
Extension
Teach students that tic–tac–toe is more than just a game of chance. Have students discuss with a partner the strategies they can use as they play. Are there any moves that will ensure a win? How can they plan ahead to predict what their opponent will do? What are some moves they can make to block their opponent from winning? Invite students to share their strategies for thinking ahead and winning the game!
