This simple sunflower craft makes it easy for children to express their thanks!
This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 3rd grade / 3 - 8 years
You will need:
- Sunflower petals template
- Sunflower stem template
- Sunflower center template
- Construction Paper - 12" x 18" (orange)
- Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (green, brown, yellow and white)
- Sunflower seeds (in shell)
- Black crayon or marker
- Help-Yourself Glue Tubes
- Safety Scissors
Before you begin:
Reproduce the sunflower petals, sunflower stem and sunflower center templates onto 9" x 12" construction paper. Use yellow for the petals, green for the stem, and brown for the center. Each child will need one stem, one center and 5–10 petals.Directions
- Pass out the templates and prompt students to cut them out. (For younger children, you may want to have volunteers help you cut the templates in advance.)
- Encourage students to write (or dictate as you write) things they are thankful for on several petals.
- Provide each student with a 12" x 18" sheet of orange construction paper. Help students glue the parts of the sunflower onto the orange paper.
- Prompt students to glue sunflower seeds to the center of the sunflower.
- If desired, have students cut a strip of white construction paper and glue it below the sunflower. On the strip, have students write, “I am thankful.” (Or write it for them.)
- As the sunflowers are drying, invite students to share one or two of the things they are thankful for!
- Display the completed sunflowers on a bulletin board titled “We Are Thankful!”
