Teach your students about lines of symmetry with these easy-to-make evergreen trees!
This activity is appropriate for:
2nd – 4th grade / 7 - 9 years
You will need:
- Evergreen tree template
- Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (green and white)
- Scissors
- Lakeshore Glue Sticks
Preparation
Cut the green construction paper into strips that are 8½ inches by 2½ inches.![]()
Directions
- Provide each student with a copy of the evergreen tree template, a pencil, and two strips of green construction paper.
- Have students cut out the tree halves from the template. Prompt students to place both tree halves–one beneath the other–on one of the green strips. The straight edges of the tree halves should line up with the edge of the strip. Instruct students to trace the tree halves onto the strip. Then have them do the same on the second strip.
- Instruct students to cut out along the lines they traced, keeping both the green tree halves and the strips intact.
- Give each student a sheet of white construction paper and have them position the paper horizontally on their desks.
- Have students glue one of the green strips to the right side of the white paper. The straight edge of the strip should line up with the edge of the white paper.
- Have students glue on two green tree halves to form two complete trees that are half green and half white.
- Instruct students to glue the second green strip about five inches from the left edge of the white paper. Then encourage them to repeat step 6.
- The resulting work of art will show four evergreen trees that are each half green and half white. Be sure to point out to students that the dividing line between green and white on each tree is the line of symmetry. If desired, have students label the line of symmetry on each tree.
- Display the completed pictures on a bulletin board titled “’Tis the Season for Symmetry!”
