This cute crab craft is a cool way to kick off National Zoo and Aquarium Month!

This activity is appropriate for:
pre-k - 2nd grade / 4 - 7 years

You will need:

Styrofoam egg cartons (one egg “cup” per student)
Washable Tempera - 6-Color Set (red)
Classroom Paintbrushes - Set of 24
Recycled newspapers
Puffy Pipe Stems (3 red stems per student)
Wiggly Eyes (one pair per student)
Tacky Glue
Scissors

Before you begin:

Cover a work surface with recycled newspapers to protect it from paint.
Cut apart egg cartons so there is one egg cup for each student.
For each student, cut two pipe stems into fourths for the crab’s legs and a third pipe stem in half for its claws.

Directions

Provide each student with an egg cup, a paintbrush and some red tempera paint. Have students turn the egg cup upside down and paint the outside of it red. Allow the paint to dry.
Give each student eight red pipe stem legs and two red pipe stem claws.
Instruct students to gently push the end of each of the eight legs into the sides of the carton cup, four on one side and four on the other. Then show them how to bend each leg downward so that the crab appears to “walk” on the work surface!
Have students add dabs of glue to the pipe stem ends inside the egg cups. Explain that this will hold the pipe stems in place. Allow the glue to dry.
Help students push one end of each remaining pipe stem into the front of their egg cups, curving the ends to look like claws.
Give each student a pair of Wiggly Eyes. Encourage students to glue the eyes onto the front of the cup, above the claws.
Once the glue has dried, encourage students to take their crabs home to play with! (You can suggest creative play in a sandbox, backyard, on the sidewalk, etc.)
