Springtime Birds’ Nest
|
Welcome the first signs of spring with this adorable paper-plate birds’ nest!
This activity is appropriate for:
pre-k – 2nd grade / 4 – 7 years
You will need:
- Paper plates (one for each student)
- Brown markers or crayons (one per student)
- Brown paper bags or Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (brown) cut into 1/4" strips—or Hair-Colors Crinkle Strips (brown)
- Pom-Poms (about 1"2")
- Wiggly Eyes (six per student)
- Construction Paper - 9" x 12" cut into 1/8" triangles (orange)
- Help-Yourself Glue Tubes
- Stapler
- Scissors
Before you begin:
- Cut a paper plate in half for each student.
- Place the plates together with the inside of the plates facing each other. Staple the plates together around the edges to make the “nest,” leaving an opening along the top edges for the “birds” to roost in!

Directions
- Provide each student with a preassembled paper-plate nest and a brown marker or crayon.
- Have students color one side of the paper-plate nest brown.
- Give students a handful of brown paper strips and invite them to glue the strips on top of the plate’s brown side so that the strips overlap one another. (You may want to encourage students to scrunch the strips so they look a little messy, like a real nest.)
- As the glue on the nests dries, invite students to choose three pom-poms to create their birds.
- Have students glue Wiggly Eyes and a small orange triangle nose onto each pom-pom bird.
- Show students how to glue the pom-pom birds inside the opening of the nest so that they peek out of the top!
- Attach the finished products to a bulletin board with a clever title, such as “Home Is Where Your Nest Is” or “Home Tweet Home” or “Spring Is Here: Every Birdie Welcome!”
