Share the bright colors of spring with this tasty rainbow treat!

This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten - 2nd grade / 5 - 7 years

You will need:

Baby food jars with lids (one per student)
Small candies in rainbow colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
Yellow pom-poms
Rainbow poem reproducible
Tacky Glue
Curling ribbon
Hole punch
Scissors
Lakeshore Standard Crayon Packs

Before you begin:

A week or two before starting this project, ask parents to start collecting baby food jars. Wash the jars with soap and water, and allow them to dry.
Print and copy the rainbow poem reproducible. Cut apart the poems (one per student) and punch a hole in each one.

Directions

Give each student a baby food jar and a handful of candies. Encourage students to fill the jar by layering the candies according to color.
Have students secure the lid tightly to the top of the jar.
Invite students to glue 4–5 yellow glitter pom-poms to the top of the jar. (Explain that the pom-poms are the “gold”!)
Give each student a copy of the poem, a piece of curling ribbon and crayons. Invite them to color in their poems.
Help each student use the curling ribbon to tie the poem to the jar, completing their pot of gold!
