Students can personalize their Thanksgiving settings with these homemade turkey table toppers!
This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 2nd grade / 3 - 7 years
You will need:
- Pinecones
- Wiggly Eyes
- Pom-Poms (brown)
- Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (yellow and red)
- Pipe Stems (red, yellow and orange)
- Help-Yourself Glue Tubes
- Broad-Tip Markers - Student Pack
- Safety Scissors
- Index cards
Directions
- For each place card holder, give each student two pipe stems of each color (red, yellow and orange). Instruct them to loop the pipe stems in half and twist the ends of each pipe stem together to make six separate “feathers” for the project.
- Have students glue the pipe stem feathers in a row near the base of a pinecone—alternating colors to make a pattern.
- Next, instruct students to cut a small triangle shape from yellow construction paper to use as the beak—and a red, squiggly shape from the red paper to use as the turkey’s snood that hangs over the beak.
- Then, have students glue two wiggly eyes, one beak and one snood onto a pom-pom ball. Then, they can glue the pom-pom ball to the narrow end of the pinecone to create the turkey’s head.
- Finally, trim index cards to 2" x 3" and have students use a marker to write the name of a Thanksgiving guest on a card.
- Slip the place cards into the pinecones between the row of “feathers” and the head of the turkey, and tell students to set the completed place card holders on their Thanksgiving table to indicate where they would like their guests to be seated!
