These adorable hats will add the perfect touch to any Thanksgiving feast!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 3rd grade / 3 - 8 years

You will need:

For Boys:

For Girls:

For Boys:
Before you begin: Cut strips of paper about 1 inch wide. Have adult volunteers wrap a strip around each child’s head and tape the ends together. The child will use this as a guide to measure the size of his hat.

  1. Give each student a 12" x 18" sheet of black construction paper. Help students place their guide on the center of the paper and trace around it with a white crayon.
  2. Have students draw a larger circle around the first circle to create the brim of the hat. Prompt students to cut out the brim and place it on their head to make sure it’s the right size.
  3. Give each student a 9" x 12" sheet of black construction paper. Instruct students to tape the ends together to create a cylinder shape that fits right inside the hat brim.
  4. Have students place the brim on one end of the cylinder and use tape to secure them together.
  5. Prompt students to glue the gray or brown strip of paper around the base of the hat just above the brim.
  6. Give each student a piece of foil and instruct students to cut out a square buckle. Have students glue the buckle onto the gray sash. Allow the glue to dry.
  7. Invite students to wear their hats during your Thanksgiving celebration!

For Girls:
  1. Give each student a piece of white construction paper. Help students fold the long edge of the paper over to create a 2-inch brim for the bonnet.
  2. On the opposite edge of the paper, have students cut 2 vertical slits that are about 3 inches long. One slit should be 6 inches from the left side of the paper, and the other slit should be 6 inches from the right side of the paper.
  3. Instruct students to punch a hole on each end of the brim. Then have students tie a length of yarn to each hole.
  4. Have each student work with a partner (or adult volunteer) to carefully bend the bonnet to frame her face, overlapping the flaps on the back. Then have the student secure the flaps with tape.
  5. Encourage students to tie the yarn under their chins to complete the look!
