This creative hands-on activity is a fun way to teach students to recognize, build and extend simple patterns!
This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten - 3rd grade / 5 - 8 years
You will need:
- Have students choose a colored sheet of construction paper that will serve as the background for their picture (e.g., blue for an ocean scene, green for a farm scene, etc.).
- Let students select a set of stampers (e.g., ocean creatures, farm animals, creepy crawlers, etc.), then have them stamp pictures from the ink pads onto the paper to make a pattern across the page from left to right (e.g., fish, dolphin, crab, fish, dolphin, crab).
- Encourage students to experiment with other stampers to make a variety of patterns in the picture (e.g., shark, shark, starfish, starfish; pig, cow, pig, cow; or butterfly, ladybug, dragonfly, butterfly, ladybug, dragonfly).
- Finally, have students use markers to add details to complete the scene (e.g., add bubbles and seaweed to an ocean scene, or add hay bales and a barn to a farm scene).
