Children make their own cold–weather friend and then learn all about penguins!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool – 2nd grade / 3 – 7 years

You will need:

Penguin template
White paper plates
Markers or crayons (black and orange)
Wiggly Eyes
Safety Scissors
Help-Yourself Glue Tubes

Directions

Give each student a white paper plate and a copy of the penguin template.
Direct students to color the beak orange and the feet, wings, and top of the head black. Then have students cut out the pieces.
Instruct students to turn their plates upside down. This will be the penguin’s body. Have students glue on the head, beak, feet, and wings.
Invite students to glue on wiggly eyes to complete their penguins!

Extension

Read a book about penguins to your students (such as Penguins, Penguins, Everywhere! by Bob Barner, If You Were a Penguin by Wendell and Florence Minor, or Penguins! by Gail Gibbons). Give each student a strip of paper and invite students to write down a penguin fact they learned from the story. (Have younger students dictate the sentence as you write.) Then attach the facts along with students’ paper plate penguins to a bulletin board titled “Pondering Penguins”!
