Directions
- Provide each student with a brown paper bag for their scarecrow, recycled newspaper and the craft materials.
- Encourage students to add Wiggly Eyes and draw a mouth on their scarecrow bags.
- Have students crumple recycled newspaper and use it to stuff the bags about 2/3 full, giving the bags some shape.
- Instruct students to close their bag around the top of a ruler or wooden dowel and secure it firmly in place with tape.
- Photocopy the hat templates onto yellow or brown construction paper and have each student cut out a hat. Invite students to decorate their hats with gemstones or buttons and then glue the hats onto the top of their stuffed bags, adding hair made from Crinkle Strips, yarn or raffia.
- Have students tie a colorful felt strip or bandana around the “neck” of the scarecrow (where the bag is taped to the ruler or dowel).
- Invite students to stick the scarecrow in their garden at home—or prop it up next to their front door to welcome visitors!
