Mitten Bookmarks
|
Kids can mark their page with fun–to–make soft mittens!
This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten – 4th grade / 5 – 9 years
You will need:
- Mitten template
- Felt (in a variety of colors)
- Foam Sheets
- Acrylic Gemstones, Flexible Foam Shapes or Easy-Stick Glitter Shapes
- Tacky Glue
- Ribbon (ž inch wide)
- Marker
- Scissors
Preparation
- Print and cut out the mitten template. Using a marker, trace the two mittens onto felt, making enough pairs for each student in your class. (You may want to have adult volunteers cut out the felt mittens in advance for younger students.)
- Cut the foam sheets into strips that are ― inch wide and 2 inches long. You will need enough strips for each student to have two.
- Cut the ribbon into 5–inch–long pieces. Make sure to cut one piece for each student.

Directions
- Invite each student to select a pair of felt mittens.
- Give each student two foam strips. Have students attach a strip to each mitten to make a cuff across the bottom.
- Instruct students to decorate their mittens with gemstones, foam shapes or glitter shapes.
- Give each student a piece of ribbon. Have them glue one end of the ribbon to the back of each mitten. Allow the glue to dry completely.
- Encourage students to use the mittens as bookmarks for winter reading selections!

Extension
Before completing this activity, read The Mitten by Jan Brett. Ask students why Nicki’s grandmother did not think it was a good idea to make white mittens. (They would get lost in the snow.) Then explain to students that they are going to make their own pair of colorful mittens to use as wintertime bookmarks!
