Celebrate Mardi Gras with these colorful and fun-to-make masks!
This activity is appropriate for:
k - 4th grade / 5 - 9 years
You will need:
- Mask template
- Cardstock (purple, green or gold/yellow)
- Colored Feathers
- Peel & Stick Glitter Stars and/or Acrylic Gemstones
- Glitter Pom-Poms
- Lakeshore Jumbo Glitter Painters - 12-Bottle Set
- Lakeshore Scissors Set - Blunt-Tip
- Tacky Glue
- Hole punch
- Ribbon (any color)
- Jenny Giraffe’s Mardi Gras Ride by Cecilia Casrill Dartez or Gaston Goes to Mardi Gras by James Rice (optional)
- Pencils
Directions
- Download, copy and cut out several mask templates. Have each student trace a template onto cardstock and cut it out. (You may want to complete this step ahead of time for younger students.)
- Provide students with decorative material (e.g., Colored Feathers, Glitter Stars, Glitter Pom-Poms, Glitter Painters, etc.). Encourage students to glue on the materials of their choice to decorate their masks for Mardi Gras!
- Allow the glue to dry, and cut out strips of ribbon for each student.
- Help students punch a hole on each side of their masks. Encourage students to tie ribbon through the holes so they can tie their masks around their heads.

Learning Extension
Encourage students to wear their handmade masks as you read aloud Jenny Giraffe’s Mardi Gras Ride by Cecilia Casrill Dartez or Gaston Goes to Mardi Gras by James Rice. Discuss the Mardi Gras traditions that are introduced in the book, including parades and Mardi Gras masks!
