Students make adorable paper plate puppets—and learn all about March weather!
This activity is appropriate for:
pre-k - 1st grade / 4 - 6 years
You will need:
- Lion and the Lamb template
- Paper plates (one for each student)
- Jumbo Craft Sticks
- Art Tissue Paper (red, orange, yellow and brown)
- Cotton balls
- Best-Buy Crayons
- Help-Yourself Glue Tubes
- Safety Scissors
- Tape or stapler
- Chart paper (optional)
Preparation
- Using tape or a stapler, attach a craft stick to the bottom of each paper plate.
- Reproduce the Lion and the Lamb template (showing the lion’s face, the lamb’s face and the lamb’s ears) onto white paper. You will need one for each student.
- Cut tissue paper into one-inch squares for students to use to create the lion’s mane.
Directions
- Tell students that there is a saying that March “comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” Explain that the weather at the beginning of March can be very different from the weather at the end of the month.
- Tell students they are going to make a puppet that shows a lion on one side and a lamb on the other. Provide students with the Lion and the Lamb template and instruct students to color the lion’s face yellow and the lamb’s ears black. Then have students color the lamb's nose pink.
- Give each student a paper plate (with craft stick attached) and have students lay their plates faceup on their desks. Have students cut out the faces and ears. Then have students glue the lion's face to the center of their plates.
- Provide students with tissue paper squares in all four colors. Instruct students to glue the squares around the edge of the plate to make the lion’s mane. Encourage them to overlap the squares so that no white is showing through. Allow the glue to dry.
- Have students turn over their plates. Prompt them to glue the lamb’s face in the center of their plates. Instruct them to glue an ear on each side of the lamb's face.
- Give each student about 20–25 cotton balls and invite students to glue the cotton balls around the lamb’s face. Allow the glue to dry.
- Teach students the following poem and encourage them to act it out with their puppets!
- March comes in like a lion,
- So wild and bold!
- The strong wind is blowing,
- The weather is cold!
- By the end of the month—
- A complete turnaround,
- It goes out like a lamb,
- With a soft, gentle sound.
Extension
Use chart paper to create a class weather graph. Each morning, record the temperature and the weather. At the end of the month, compare the weather at the beginning of the month to the weather at the end of the month. Did March come in like a lion and go out like a lamb?
