Independence Day Drum

These homemade drums are sure to be a hit in any patriotic parade!
This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 2nd grade / 3 - 7 years
You will need:
- Recycled oatmeal or coffee containers with lids
- Butcher or construction paper (red, white and blue)
- Sponges
- Painting Bowls - 10-Color Set or 3 disposable pie tins
- Lakeshore Fully Washable Liquid Tempera - Pints (red, white and blue)
- Tacky Glue
- Lakeshore Jumbo Glitter Painters - 12-Bottle Set
- Recycled newspaper or butcher paper
- Scissors
Before you begin:
- Cover a workspace with recycled newspaper or butcher paper.
- Set out a bowl of paint in each of the three colors. Make sure there’s enough paint to cover the bottom of each bowl.
- Cut several sponges into star shapes and place them next to the paint.
- Measure and cut the red, white and blue butcher or construction paper to fit over the lidded oatmeal or coffee containers. Set the paper on the workspace with the paint and sponges.

Directions
- Have a few students at a time come to the painting area.
- Invite each student to select a red, white or blue sheet of butcher or construction paper.
- Encourage students to dip the sponges in the paint and stamp the star shape onto their sheets of paper. They can stamp as many or as few stars as they like!
- Set the sheets aside and allow the paint to dry overnight.
- When paint is dry, allow students to decorate with glitter painters.
- Provide each student with an oatmeal or coffee container.
- Help students glue their sponge-painted sheets around the outside of their containers.
- Play a patriotic tune (such as “My Country ’Tis of Thee” or “This Land Is Your Land”) and have students tap their drums to the beat of the song!
