A Healthy Picnic
|
Adorable picnic baskets make a great bulletin-board display…and encourage healthy eating, too!
This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 1st grade / 3 - 6 years
You will need:
- Picnic basket template
- Old magazines or supermarket flyers
- Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (brown)
- Lakeshore Jumbo Glue Sticks
- Safety Scissors
- Best-Buy Crayons (optional)
- Checkered tablecloth (optional)
Directions
- Lead students in a discussion about making healthy food choices. Invite students to share some of their favorite foods that are also good for you (such as carrots, celery, peanut butter and bananas). Talk about which of these foods would be easy to pack and take along on a picnic!
- Reproduce the picnic basket template onto brown construction paper, and give one copy to each student. Or you can print the template on white paper and provide crayons for students to color their baskets.
- Provide students with magazines or supermarket flyers, and encourage them to cut out pictures of their favorite healthy foods. (For younger students, you may want to preselect some pictures of healthy foods that they can choose from.)
- Instruct students to create a collage by gluing the pictures onto the basket template.
- Invite students to share their collages, explaining which foods they chose and why.
- Display the picnic baskets on a classroom bulletin board. If you’d like, you can cover the board with a checkered tablecloth first. Add the title “Learning About Healthy Foods Is a Picnic!”
