Students will have a bushel of fun with this hands-on craft!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 3rd grade / 3 - 8 years

You will need:

Before you begin:

  1. Reproduce the apple template onto red, yellow and green construction paper.
  2. Reproduce the tree trunk template onto brown construction paper. Each student will need one tree trunk.
  3. Cover a large table with sheets of newspaper or butcher paper. Pour green paint into each pie tin, just covering the bottom of the tin. Set the tins out on the table.

Directions

  1. Give each student a sheet of 12" x 18" construction paper, a tree trunk and one sheet of apples.
  2. Have students cut out the tree trunk and apples. Then have them glue the tree trunk to the white sheet of paper.
  3. Invite a few students at a time to bring their mounted tree trunks to the painting area. Show students how to dip their hands in paint and press them onto the sheet to add “leaves” to their trees.
  4. After the paint has dried, invite students to glue apples onto their trees.
  5. Display the trees on a bulletin board titled “This Class Is the Apple of My Eye!” or “Our Class Is a Bushel of Fun!”

Learning Extension

Use this activity to introduce color patterns! After students have finished their trees, invite a few students to bring their projects to the front of the classroom. Have them hold up their trees and arrange the students in a pattern based on the color of their apples. Encourage students to tell you which color comes next in the pattern. Then invite additional groups of students to stand up and arrange themselves in different patterns.

Have students sing this fun pattern song to the tune of “The Muffin Man.” Repeat the second verse for each pattern students have created!
  • Have you seen an apple tree,
  • an apple tree, an apple tree?
  • Yellow, red, or even green—
  • A tasty treat for us!

  • Name the pattern that you see,
  • The colors on the apple trees.
  • Here’s the pattern that we see—
  • Red, green, green, red, green, green.
On a bulletin board, display the trees in the patterns that students have created. Title the display “Patterns Ripe for Picking!”
