Students will love making these turkey handprint aprons to wear while helping their family out in the kitchen on Thanksgiving Day!
This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 2nd grade / 3 - 7 years
You will need:
- Plain white or off-white aprons (can be found at a craft or hobby supply store)
- Washable Fingerpaint - 1 Pint (brown and 4 bright colors)
- Natural-Bristle Paintbrushes - 10-Color Set
- Old newspaper
- Markers (black and orange)
Directions
- Have students spread out some old newspaper on top of their work space. Then, lay the aprons out flat on top of the newspaper.
- Use the brushes to paint a thick layer of fingerpaint onto each student’s palm and fingers. Use a different bright color for each finger and paint the palm and thumb brown. (The fingers will make the colored turkey feathers, and the palm and thumb will form the turkey’s body and head.)
- Help students press their painted hand firmly onto the surface of their apron to make a turkey handprint.
- Reapply paint to their hands, and then help students make another turkey handprint on their aprons. Encourage students to make as many turkey handprints as they desire to decorate their aprons. Use markers to add details, such as eyes, beaks and legs.
- Allow the paint to dry. Then, encourage students to wear their aprons while they help their families prepare a delicious Thanksgiving dinner!
