This colorful, easy-to-make craft project is fun for everyone—plus, it’s deliciously edible!

This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 5th grade / 4 - 10 years

You will need:

  • Graham crackers
  • White frosting (canned or homemade)
  • Assortment of holiday candy (gumdrops, peppermints, candy canes, licorice, etc.)
  • Plastic knife
  • Wire whisk
  • Mixing bowl
  • Pastry bag


  1. Make your own frosting or empty a can of white frosting into a medium-sized bowl. Mix the frosting thoroughly with a wire whisk so that it is smooth and creamy, not runny.
  2. Spoon some of the frosting into a pastry bag (or a resealable plastic bag with a small hole cut out of the corner).
  3. Place a graham cracker on a flat surface and pipe frosting around the edges.
  4. Take four additional crackers—one for each side of the house—and stand them up in the frosting so that the gingerbread house looks like a box with no top.
  5. Have students help hold the “walls” of the house upright as you squeeze additional frosting onto all the outside corners, as well as along the bottom for reinforcement. Then, let the house stand (or put it in the refrigerator for a while) so that the frosting has a chance to harden.
  6. When the frosting has hardened a little, pipe some more frosting along the top edges of the house and position two additional graham crackers on top of the house to make a V-shaped roof. (Note: It is helpful if these two crackers hang over the edges a little so that they can “rest” in the frosting on top of the house.)
  7. Once the structure is built, there will be two triangular-shaped open spaces in the roof area on either side of the house.
  8. Take out your assortment of candy and encourage students to decorate the roof and sides of their houses by securing the candy onto their houses with frosting.
  9. Place the houses in a prominent location as a holiday decoration. Then, allow students to eat their gingerbread houses for a special treat!
