Children’s creativity blooms…as they turn an empty can into a collage-covered flowerpot!

This activity is appropriate for:
pre-k - 6th grade / 4 - 11 years

You will need:

Empty soup or coffee can
Fabric scraps
Old silk flowers
Mini Pom-Poms and Pipe Stems or other collage items
Best-Buy School Glue
Potting soil
4-inch potted plant
Screwdriver
Hammer
Sandpaper
Old plate or saucer
Rocks or pebbles

Directions

Wash and dry your can. If there are any sharp edges, you should ask an adult to use sandpaper to sand them down smooth. If you don’t have sandpaper, you can have an adult cover the rough edges with several layers of duct tape.
Turn the can upside down. Have an adult tap the screwdriver with a hammer to poke holes in the bottom of the can.
Glue fabric scraps to the outside of the can.
Decorate the outside of the can with silk flowers, pom-poms, pipe stems, etc. You can also spell out the name of the plant by gluing on letters cut out from magazines.
Place rocks or pebbles in the bottom of the can, forming a single layer.
Fill the can 2/3 full of potting soil.
Remove the potted plant from its container and transplant it into the can.
Fill in the edges with potting soil. Gently pat the soil down.
Place the can on an old plate or saucer, then water your plant.
Place your plant in a sunny window and water it regularly—then watch it grow!
