Fourth of July Firecrackers
|
Students show off their patriotic pride with these fun-to-make firecrackers!
This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 3rd grade / 4 - 8 years
You will need:
- Firecracker template
- Cardboard paper towel tubes (cut in half)
- Aluminum foil (cut into three-inch squares)
- Fancy Pipe Stems - Class Set (sparkly or striped)
- Washable Broad-Tip Markers - Class Pack or Best-Buy Crayons
- Glitter Jumbo Jars - Set of 6 (optional)
- Help-Yourself Glue Tubes
- Safety Scissors
- Tape
- Stapler
Directions
- Give each student a copy of the firecracker template. Prompt students to color the stripe around the stars blue and every other vertical stripe red. (For an extra-festive touch, allow students to decorate their firecrackers with glitter, too!)
- Provide each student with a cardboard tube and a square of aluminum foil. Help students cover one end of the tube with the foil and secure with tape.
- Instruct students to cut out their template and glue it around the tube.
- Have students take a pipe stem and poke it through the foil to make the fuse. (To keep the pipe stem from sliding out, bend the end of the pipe stem that’s on the inside of the tube.)
- Make a classroom bulletin board titled “Fourth of July Fireworks!” Slip a stapler into the open end of each tube and staple it onto the board—to create an eye-catching 3-D display!

(Sing to the tune of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”)
Happy Birthday to our country!
We’re the U.S.A.
Happy Birthday to our country!
It’s Independence Day!
Light the sky with firecrackers,
Red and white and blue!
Let’s all celebrate together
With smiles and laughter, too!
