Kids create a colorful fish using cool craft materials like wiggly eyes, spangles, sequins, and more!
This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten & up / 5 years & up
You will need:
Directions
- Cut out 2"-3" equal-size triangle pieces from two paper plates (this will form the mouth of the fish). Put aside the pieces to be used later as fins.
- For the tail of the fish, cut colored tissue paper into 6" x 6" sheets. Stack sheets evenly together, fold in half, and fan out to reveal each color!
- Lay one plate right-side-up on the table. Place “fanned out” tissue paper onto the plate opposite the mouth. The last two inches of the tissue paper should hang over the edge of the plate.
- Turn the second plate upside down and place on top of the first plate, being sure the mouths are matching. Staple around the edges of the two plates, securing them together. The tissue paper should be secure between the two plates. It now serves as the fish’s tail fin.
- Paint both sides of the fish with watercolors. Be sure to also paint both sides of the two triangles that were cut from the plates earlier. Set aside to dry.
- Embellish the fish with glitter painters, spangles & sequins, flexible shapes, and a wiggly eye on each side!
- Cut a 1½" vertical slit about two inches to the left of the corner of the fish’s mouth.
- Glue together the tips of the two triangle pieces that were cut out earlier and insert into the slit, securing with more glue. The fish now has a pectoral fin!
- Punch a hole at the top of the fish. String a long piece of yarn through the hole and tie. The fantastic fish is now ready to display!
