These colorful snowflakes add a splash of color to your indoor winter wonderland!
This activity is appropriate for:
pre-k - 3rd grade / 4 - 8 years
You will need:
- Round white coffee filters
- Wax paper
- Food coloring (variety of colors)
- Bowls of water
- Classroom Paintbrushes - Set of 24
- Fiskars Classroom Scissors
- Hole punch
- String or curling ribbon
- Five Little Snowflakes reproducible
Before you begin:
Set up an art station or table so students can complete this project in small groups (45 students). Cover your surface with wax paper, and add a few drops of food coloring (a different color for each bowl) to the bowls of water.
Directions
- Have students take a coffee filter and flatten it on the wax paper surface.
- Invite students to dip a paintbrush into the colored water and drip a few drops onto the coffee filter. (Note: Warn students to avoid using too much water. A small drop of color will spread to create interesting patterns or designs on the filter.) Encourage them to use as many or as few colors as they like.
- Set aside the coffee filters and allow them to dry.
- Guide students to fold the dry coffee filters in half several times. Show them how to cut small shapes (e.g., triangles, squares, semicircles) into the sides of the folds.
- Have students unfold their coffee filters to reveal snowflakes in unique patterns and colors!
Learning Extension
- Teach students the Five Little Snowflakes chant to practice addition and subtraction. Print the Five Little Snowflakes reproducible and pass out a copy of the chant to each student. Invite five students at a time to come up to the front of the room and act out each verse, snowflakes in hand, as the class chants together!
- Punch a hole in the top of each snowflake and attach a length of string or curling ribbon to it. Hang these colorful snowflakes from the ceiling or windows to brighten up your classroom!
