“April Showers” Umbrella Mobiles
|
These delightful mobiles allow students to express what they love about spring!
This activity is appropriate for:
preschool - 2nd grade / 3 - 7 years
You will need:
- Paper plates (one for each student)
- Fiskars Classroom Scissors
- Raindrop template
- Umbrella handle template
- Easy-Stick Glitter Shapes, Glimmer Stickers or Peel & Stick Glitter Stars
- Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (light blue and purple)
- Write & Wipe Thin-Line Markers - Class Pack
- Lakeshore Glue Sticks
- Regular Dot Art Painters - 6-Color Set
- Stapler
- Hole punch
- Yarn or string
Before you begin:
- Cut the paper plates in half to make a 3-D umbrella top for each student. Take one plate half and cut a slit from the bottom center of the plate about halfway up. Take the other plate half and make a slit from the top center about halfway down. Slide the two slits together to make an “X” that forms the 3-D umbrella top.
- Make copies of the raindrop template on light blue paper (four drops per student) and the umbrella handle template on purple paper (one handle per student). Precut the raindrops and handles for younger students.

Directions
- Give each student an umbrella top, four raindrops and a handle. Provide stickers and invite students to decorate their umbrella tops with them.
- Distribute the glue sticks, scissors and markers. Help students cut out and glue (or staple) their umbrella handles to the bottom of their umbrella tops.
- Encourage students to write one thing they like about spring on each raindrop. (Younger children can dictate words for you to write.)
- Have students cut out their raindrops. Punch a hole in the top of each drop. Then punch four holes in each umbrella top, one at the bottom of each section.
- Loop varying lengths of yarn or string through the raindrops and help students tie them to their umbrella top (one drop per section).
- Invite students to share the different spring things written on their raindrops. Then punch a hole in the top of the mobiles, using yarn or string to hang them from the ceiling for a bright springtime display!
