Directions

1. Encourage students to select a book they have recently read and explain to them that they will be writing a book report to share highlights of that book with other readers.
2. Provide each student with a recycled cereal box. (A few weeks prior to the project, you may want to ask parents to save cereal boxes to donate, or have students bring in their own cereal boxes.)
3. Give each student a copy of the Cereal Box Book Report reproducible pages. Have students use a pen or pencil to fill in the blanks in each section with information about their books.
4. Instruct students to cut out each section along the dashed lines and glue them to their boxes. (Have them glue the title and author section to the top of the box, the brief summary on one side panel of the box, and the list of characters and setting on the other side panel of the box.)
5. Next, allow each student to select two sheets of construction paper in any color they like—one for the front of the box and the other for the back. For the front of the box, have students design a book cover and use markers or crayons to draw it onto one of the sheets of construction paper. Encourage them to include the title of the book and a picture that might compel another reader to want to read the book. For the back of the box, have students draw a picture of their favorite scene of event from the book.
6. Have students use glue to attach the two sheets of construction paper to the front and back of the box, respectively.
7. Display the cereal boxes on a table in your classroom, and set aside time for students to present their cereal box book reports to the class!
