Kids make one-of-a-kind masterpieces—using their thumbs instead of brushes!

This activity is appropriate for:
kindergarten - 3rd grade / 5 - 8 years

You will need:

Directions

  1. Show children how to gently press their thumb first into an ink pad, then onto the paper to make a colorful thumbprint.
  2. Explain to children that they can use their thumbprints to make an exciting picture. (To keep your ink pads clean, make sure to wipe children’s thumbs with wet wipes or paper towels before they use a different colored ink pad.)
  3. Thumbprint images children could create:
    • flower (4 thumbprint petals, with a different colored thumbprint for the center)
    • butterfly (thumbprint wings)
    • caterpillar (thumbprint body parts in alternating colors)
  4. Let the ink dry. Then, use a black marker to complete the images. For example, draw legs on a caterpillar or a body for the butterfly.
  5. Invite students to draw and color other details like grass, trees, clouds, etc., onto their pictures. The picture is ready to display!
