June 14 is Flag Day! Students celebrate their patriotic pride with this easy-to-make Flag Day craft.

This activity is appropriate for:
pre-k - 3rd grade / 4 - 8 years

You will need:

Before you begin:

Cut out a four-inch square of blue construction paper for each student. Cut the red and white tissue paper into one-inch squares.

Directions

  1. Show students an American flag. Explain that the 13 stripes represent our nation’s first 13 colonies and the 50 stars represent the 50 states.
  2. Tell students they are going to make their own flags in honor of Flag Day (June 14). Give each student a copy of the American flag template, a precut blue square and a sheet of construction paper (red, white or blue).
  3. Have students mount the template onto the construction paper. Then have students glue the blue square to the upper left-hand corner of the flag.
  4. Provide each student with red tissue-paper squares and a pencil. Demonstrate how to fold a square over the eraser end of a pencil. Put glue on the tissue paper and then press it onto the construction paper. Prompt students to use this technique to make the red stripes on their flag.
  5. Provide students with white tissue-paper squares for the stars on their flag.
  6. Once the glue has dried, punch holes in the top two corners of each flag. Tie pieces of yarn to the flags so students can wear them around their necks!
  7. Play a patriotic song like “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and lead students on a patriotic parade around the classroom—or to visit other classrooms in your school.
  8. Teach students this patriotic poem and have them recite it as part of their performance!

    American Flag
    Our flag is a symbol
    That stands for liberty.
    It represents the fifty states
    That make up our country.
We proudly wave these stars and stripes
    And put them on display.
    To celebrate our freedom
    Across the U.S.A.
