Read Christopher Counting by Valeri Gorbachev.
Talk to the students about how excited the main character is about counting. Ask, “What are some objects that Christopher counted?” Then ask, “What are some objects that you can count?”
Point out that Christopher was counting by 1s. Explain that students can count objects faster by skip-counting.
- Invite six volunteers to take off their shoes and line them up in pairs in the front of the room.
- Ask students to count the shoes with you. Instead of counting one shoe at a time, explain that you will count by 2s.
- Use a pointer or yardstick to point to each pair as you lead the class in skip-counting by 2s. Say, “How many shoes are there? That’s rightó12!”
- Have students retrieve their shoes. Call on 10 new volunteers to line up their shoes in pairs.
- Lead the class again in skip-counting by 2s. Say, “How many shoes are there? That’s rightó20!”
- Challenge students with questions like the following. Encourage them to count by 2s to find the answers.
Now ask each student to raise one hand. Explain that you want to count how many fingers there are.
Point out that there are five fingers on each hand, so counting by 5s will tell you how many fingers there are in all.
Point to each hand as you lead the class in skip-counting by 5s. (Instruct students to lower their hands after they are counted.)
Challenge students with questions like the following. Encourage them to count by 5s to find the answers.
- If 3 kids come up and take their shoes, how many shoes will be left? (14)
- If I ask only 5 kids to line up their shoes, how many shoes will there be? (10)
- If there are 8 shoes lined up, how many kids took off their shoes? (4)
- If I ask only 3 kids to line up their shoes, how many shoes will there be? (6)
- If 4 kids each raise one hand, how many fingers are in the air? (20)
- If 30 fingers are raised, how many hands are in the air? (6)
- If 7 kids each raise one hand, how many fingers are in the air? (35)
- To practice counting by 2s, give each student a copy of the Acorn Number Cards and Counting by 2s Number Line. To practice counting by 5s, give each student a copy of the Pumpkin Number Cards and
Counting by 5s Number Line.
- Have students cut apart the number lines and glue them together. Then have students cut out the number cards.
- Challenge students to arrange the number cards along the number lines to practice skip-counting. Have students glue on the cards.
- Display the completed number lines on a bulletin board titled “Fall Skip-Counting Fun!”
For older students, print out the blank acorns and pumpkins and have students write the numbers themselves! This will give them a chance to practice skip-counting on their own. Then print out the Fall Skip-Counting Fun Addition Practice worksheet and encourage students to use their skip-counting number lines to solve the problems!
