Preschool–Kindergarten

	Objectives Students will recognize and write upper– and lowercase letters. Students will identify beginning sounds.
	Materials Needed Alphabet flash cards Dr. Seuss’s ABC book Chart paper Marker Paintbrushes Cups of water Scissors
	Introduction Choose a letter (or group of letters) that your lesson will focus on. Gather students together for circle time and read aloud Dr. Seuss’s ABC. After you read the book, reread the page with the letter that you’d like to emphasize. Talk about the sound that letter makes. Then say the words on the page that begin with the letter. Ask, “Do these words have the same beginning sound? What letter makes that sound?”
	Procedure Print the alphabet flash cards, and cut apart the card for the letter you are focusing on. Display the card and prompt students to identify the letter and the picture. Help students identify the uppercase letter and the lowercase letter. Reinforce that the letter makes the beginning sound they hear when they say the name of the picture. Write the letter on chart paper, explaining how you make each stroke. Encourage students to “skywrite” the letter by drawing it in the air with their fingers. Invite students to think of words that begin with that letter sound. As you call on students to contribute, list the words on the chart paper.
	Guided/Independent Practice Take your class outside to a spacious area with a smooth concrete surface. Give each student a cup of water and a paintbrush. Encourage students to dip their brushes in water and practice “painting” the upper– and lowercase letter that you have been studying. Tip: If you are practicing more than one letter, put students in pairs to try this challenge activity. Prompt one partner to write an uppercase letter, and have the other partner write the corresponding lowercase letter. Then invite the partners to switch roles and try again.
